"Mersenne numbers"
|
I have been compiling a list of the Mersenne numbers (all primes) as they are discovered. My list is a bit out of date, the last entry being M37 in 1998. Can anyone please tell me the latest ones, beginning with M38, also the year of discovery of each one. I am not particularly interested in the computer that was used! My list ends at M37, with n=3,021,377. But there must have been a few since then. An extra query: which was the largest Mersenne to be found without the aid of computers? Presumably it dates back to pre-1945. Thanks.

Check out https://mathworld.wolfram.com/MersennePrime.html The largest Mersenne prime found without the aid of a computer is 2^127-1, found in 1876. Interestingly, 3 smaller primes were found somewhat later: n=61, 89, and 107, in 1883, 1911, and 1913, respectively. Then, in 1952, Raphael Robinson discovered the next 5 Mersenne primes using software running on the National Bureau of Standards Western Automatic Computer, and computers have been used ever since.
