"what is this"

I'm a noob, so I don't know if this is really suitable for this forum, but could someone pls tell me what this means? It is the same sort of puzzle as LU CKY meaning "lucky break". Here is is: UP 8

My guess would have to be "up before eight", but I don't think it qualifies as a well-known phrase like "lucky break".

You're right, it's not a mathematical problem, it's a linguistic riddle. Here's another one: there is the story of an American who once received a letter addressed in this way:

HILL
JOHN
MASS

What was his name, and where did he live?

The answer is on the last line below, so if you want to try and work it out yourself, avert your eyes. By the way, this is supposedly a true story, but I think it very unlikely.

Okay, here comes the answer:

John Underhill, Andover, Massachussetts (That's JOHN under HILL and over MASS.)

Thanks (belated) Rewboss. The answer provided by the person who gave me the question was, indeed, up before 8. I thought it was pretty lame, and only just found it out from them. As for your Massechusetts thing, it is incomprehensible to most non-Americans (I'm Australian), but it was still fun to try.
