"THE MANDELBROT MONK"
 
   Hi,

If you haven't seen this, you should. It'suggests that a 13th century monk discovered the Mandelbrot set.

   I couldn't help noticing that the copyright date on the article is April Fools Day and that the supposed source of the information is dead, making it'somewhat hard to verify. I also find it interesting that Udo's helper was Thelonius, monk. One wonders whether Udo hand a hand in inventing jazz, as well.

John Allan Paulos is quite explicit about significance of the copyright date. See his ABCNews column:

I am curious he found it necessary to make a statement on this account. This probably due to the lesson learned by math popularizers after a prunk by Martin Gardner (April 1975) produced a stir. See his Time Travel.
