"1 equals2???"

   my math teacher 'proofed' to us that 1 was equal to 2 but doing this....
a=b
a^2=ab
a^2-b^2=ab-b^2
(a-b)(a+b)=b(a-b)
a+b=b
b+b=b
2b=b
2=1

i know it's know possible for two to equal one and theres something wrong in this system of equations but i can't find it and niether can anyone i ask! please help

sara

   The first of the identities claims that
a = b.

So give them some value, e.g., set a = 5 and b = 5. Replace all occurencies of a and b with 5 in all other equations. See what transpires.

   When you cancel out a term from both sides of an equation, are you using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division? Think about that and see where it leads you. Consider the term you are cancelling out; what does it boil down to?

   You have done an invalid step.
(a-b)(a+b)=b(a-b)
a+b=b

but this is wrong because it comes after you divide the first equation by (a-b) which is equal to zero(a=b therfore a-b=0).
In maths it is invalid to divide an equation by 0.
