"Math Projects"

   Hi,

I am looking for any good math projects/project sit's with good ideas about what to do with Fractions, Decimals, Geometry...Sixth Grade math, in general.

I am hoping to come across some good projects that could take perhaps a month or so to complete....nothing too small.

Any ideas or pointers would be helpful...thanks in advance!

Rob Oliver

Well, you'll have to go on searching. There bound to be some around.

Here's one that might be fascinating if you find the right way to handle it: Stern-Brocot tree and Farey series. (Search my site - there's plenty information about both.) What do you get:

  1. Fractions: how to generate all of them, a surprising property of the mediant fractions, a chance to explain the difference between addition and mediant operation
  2. Decimals: approximation with fractions, is decimal approximation good or just convenient?
  3. Geometry: Ford's circles, tree visibility in a forest and Pick's theorem
  4. Fractals: various manners of cycle convergence depending on the starting point
  5. Polygons: star polygons and reducible fractions, see Star Polygons

While the latter two may seem too advanced for the 6th grade, as an activity it's revealing and attractive, and gives one a chance to touch on real mathematics without going too deep in. See https://www.cut-the-knot.com/ctk/Mandel.shtml|https://www.cut-the-knot.com/ctk/Mandel.shtml>.

All the best,

Check out https://camel.cecm.sfu.ca/Education/mpsf/mpsf.shtml for some pretty good ideas.
