"Diagonal of a square with side 5: not square root of 5"

On this page: https://www.cut-the-knot.org/do_you_know/numbers.shtml#visualize the discussion of irrational numbers speaks of the square root of 5 and derives it from a right triangle with sides of 2 and 1. Then it'says that an even simpler example involves a square with sides of 5 units. But the diagonal of such a square is 5 times the square root of 2. That's not an illustration of the square root of 5, is it? Many thanks for this wonderful site. It's enormously stimulating. |
