"Math puzzles and games books?"
|
Hi, I appreciate the math puzzles and games on the web site but my computer is very slow. Could you suggest some fun math puzzles and games books or booklets for children about the age of 10? My kids ages 9 and 10 like math and I'd like to keep their interest alive and challenge them with some fun math games and puzzles outside of their math books but I can't rely on my computer. |

First you should note that most of the games and puzzles at this site could be played with pencile and paper or groups of small objects - beans, pebbles, etc. So you do not have to play them with the computer all the time. There are nice books: 1. Games for math, Peggy Kaye, Pantheon Books, 1987 (K-3) 2. Family Math, J. K. Stenmark, V. Thompson, R, Cossey, The Lawrence Hall of Science, UCB, 1986 (K-5) If you see anything by Mitsumasa Anno, go fo it. Very imaginative ideas. |

But perhaps when the kids are a good deal older, say, about 14-15, you might want to introduce them to Martin Gardner's classic books -- ``Mathematical Games and Puzzles'', ``More Mathematical Games and Puzzles'', ``Mathematical Magic Show'', etc. (pub. Penguin). In the meantime, you might find that you yourself enjoy the puzzles in them! >to keep their interest alive and challenge them with some >fun math games and puzzles outside of their math books but I >can't rely on my computer. Hope this helps. Regards, KBug.
