Thank you for your prompt response. My son is doing decimals and fractions in math, but was given this problem as a "math teaser". There is no other information available, just the instructions to determine what the final number in the sequence would be. Since it is called "Countdown"-I was hoping that would be a clue, but I dont see a pattern and I am not sure what type of formula we need to find one. Thank you again. |

I have seen this problem and the actual wording is very important to the solution. The actual wording is: What would the final number of this sequence be? 4 5 3 5 6 2 4 8 The answer is 2, the number of letters in the word 'be.' |

Wow.. nothing against the parent or anyone here, but the teacher is retarded!! I can't stand questions like these classified as math questions. It's more of a brain or teaser or a waste-of-time question. This is why we end up with such a high illiteracy in math in this world. |

Curiously, I came up with 2, but only because the sums are increasing for every three numbers (the first three add up to 12, then 13, and simply add 2 to 8 and 4 to get 14). Sort of an inverse of countdown, but that's how it goes, I suppose. Chris |

You're right it's not really a math question at all. I was useless at math at school. Half the time I wasn't paying attention and the other two thirds of the time I wasn't there at all! |

Start by using the clue in the title "countdown" ( as in ..3..2..? ) Where do you see this. Look at every third digit. The first two digits in each set of three don't mean anything.(xx3,xx2,481. TAA DAA!!!!! answer:1 |
