"counting at 4"

   Hi There:

I just found your web site and was looking for ideas on teaching my four year old (she will be five in May) math. She seems to be having some difficulty with numbers any higher than 29. I'm not sure if it is "math" problem solving I am looking for, or counting. She doesn't seem to get the idea of 30, 40, 50, etc and that all the numbers inbetween start with the same first number? I have just been doing this all on my own since Sept.
Any books you might be able to recommend?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks so much

Sher

   Dear Sher:

You know, as a parent, I worry what you may do to your daughter.
Your hysterical subject matter just does not bode well. Perhaps,
it's best if you let go of your attempts to educate the child.

You may try "Teach Your Child Math" by A. Benjamin and M.B. Shermer, Lowell House, LA, 1996. I purchased it at one of the zShops at amazon.com.

But do not push your daughter. You may unwittingly cause her
a great damage both of you will regret later. It's not at all
important to count beyond 29 at her age. There's plenty of
mathematics below that number.

All the best,
Alexander Bogomolny
