Unfolding Spirals Illusion

Several effects could be observed depending on the specific values of the available parameters. Spirals may appear to interlock, concentric circles may seem to be shifted relative to each other. Sometimes the pieces will appear move like in the Revolving Circles Illusion.

The idea is due to the Japanese psychologist Akiyoshi Kitaoka, see [McNaughton, pp. 46-47].
