Continuous Line Illusion

The applet shows a continuous spiral line, although the tendency is to perceive a sequence of embedded squares. The eye does a better job at recognizing a shape than at tracing a line. But to correctly interpret the diagram, the eye needs to trace a curve - something it does not do well.
