The applet below illustrates a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem by dissection. The proof is due to Alexander G. Samosvat and is listed as #104 on the Pythagorean Theorem page.

I leave the proof as the one that does not need much explanation, if at all. This is a very illuminating example of proof without words. It does require verification, which is based on the property of two tangents to a circle from the same point being equal.
