HexyPexyHi - visited a quilter friend the other eve, and saw the dollhouse being worked on. There were two windows, each with same design, on the two side walls. They remind me of a custom home upper story small window from the 40's.
I asked if I could take a pic, and did.
The circular window has a geometric design within...in the builder's world, it would be divided with wood strips, bent to conform to the shape, and usually painted white.
In this miniature window, less than 2" wide, the strips are painted white.
Every line is a curve, which divides the circle into 8 segments.
The lines create a curved diamond in the center ( with four sides)
This diamond's points are inside another smaller circle.
The next four lines create segments, which are bisected by the lines emanating outwards from the points of the diamond. These four segments are like an orange peel.( There is a quilt pattern with this name.) There are 4 more smaller segments created by these larger arced lines which touch the outside of the smaller circle.
Where the 4 equal arcs creating the smaller circle meet the two larger arcs coming to a point on the outside circle, this creates an arced triangle, of which there are also 4.
The shapes created by this are:
1 large outer circle
1 small inner circle
4 large orange peels, bisected the short way = 8 pieces
4 small orange peels
1 central curved diamond
1 larger curved square enclosing the inner circle
4 curved triangles
It appears easy to construct, except for the large orange peels which touch the outer edge of the smaller circle. The compass point would have to be outside the large circle. These 4 arcs divide the circle's circumference into 4.
I am pretty sure this is a classic window design. It may be very old. It might also have been used to create decorative concrete blocks, used in constructing feature walls for patios, though it's a bit fancier than most.
I think it has wonderful potential for quilt design as through the use of color, one could create many shades with the intersection of the various shapes.
I do have a picture attached. I would like help in how to construct this so that I can turn it into a pattern for quilt making.
Thanks in advance for any help.
