"MinMax inequality"

   On the website https://www.cut-the-knot.org/arithmetic/MinMax.shtml
the min-max inequality is shown. However, I think that the proof of the necessary condition for the equality is not written correctly. Sufficiency of the condition is OK, but not the necessity part. It is not clear to me how the necessity can be proven.

I have rewritten the "necessary" part. Please left me know if it's any clearer now.

Yes, I get it now. Thanks. Your proof helped me in understanding it, but I then wrote it in a form that is clearer to me. Of course, it is a matter of preferences, but I attached it here in case anybody cares (I wrote it for functions, which is where I need it).

Alex, you have a great website and doing a tremendous job. Great stuff for everybody.

BTW, is there a formal reference (easily accessible) for this proof?

Thanks again,

Peter

P.S. Actually could not upload my file. It asked me to login first (but where?).

   Peter,

thank you for the kind words. "Login" is the first item in the menu bar when you go to the Conferences page. But you can send the file directly to me: alexb at cut-the-knot.com. If you do, give a full name.
