"Probablities section on cut the knot site"

I am having difficulty understanding how they explain probablities using sets or union and intersection. I get lost soon after they begin talking about how why P(AžB) = P(A) + P(B), and basicly after. Can i get help understanding what they are saying? I am trying understand probablities in at a deeper level just for enjoyment, not for any assignment

   You probably mean P(A∪B) = P(A) + P(B).

This is only true if A∩B = Ø, or, mor generally when P(A∩B) = 0.

Why this is so?

Probability theory is an abstract science that draws much of its basics from the experience, meaning that there are two possible arguments:

1. This is very close to observations.
2. A probability function is required axiomatically be additive.

Now, please you should go in greater detail of your specific difficulties.
