"Transformations & coordinate plane"

This is a question about terminology and/or syntax. Can someone out there please explain to me why when describing reflections over a particular axis the language in the textbooks, on tests, or, the language that teachers use say the
following:

"Reflection IN the y-axis"???

This language is so confusing; why can't educators use "plain
English"??? Using the following, "reflection OVER the y-axis"
does convey the SAME MEANING, does it not????????

Cesar

This is a hard one. I do not know the origins of this terminology. Sometimes it is said to be a "reflection with respect to a line."

For a similar apparent language misuse in the plain English see
