"Grade 4 math???"

My son came home today and said that he had to use "front end and compensation "to solve a math problem 523+2150
I have never heard of this, unless its anew name for an old method
can anyone help me out

The meaning of "front end" is that you start adding with the most significant digits:

As to the compensation part, I am in the dark.
