when doing a chinese remainder theory. can the equation (i.e. 10x+15y+39z=1) be solved through substitution or must one use gcd all the way through out

Unless you deal with a drill problem where you are required to demonstrate your mastery of a specific concept or a specific method, it's all up to you where to start and how to proceed.
