I have no access to AOL, but I have occasionally seen the phenomenon.

The whole page appears in a window that usually have a scroll bar on the right. Move the bar up and down so as to make the applet area disappear and then reappear.

The browsers use the refresh operation differently when the applet appears first, immediately after getting loaded, and on subsequent accesses. Why this is so is anybody's guess. You can also minimize and then restore the browser. All that is needed is a spurious refresh operation on the applet's window.
