You know what? You suck! Anyone who says things suck because they're hard is really lame. I mean, figure skating is hard, but that doesn't mean it'sucks, right?

I agree with Breanna in the sense that math is too hard for kids, but in no way could you say that the math itself sucks. It is the education system that is failing the kids, not the math. We need to put more effort into making math easier for students, through better teaching strategies. With the technology we have, we should be able to teach people math with great success, but we are not. Math is not too hard to learn, but when you do not teach correctly, it can be disastrous for the students. Do not blame the math, because it is the reason for everything.

If you wish to learn more about learning math, go to:

www.mathrevolution.com

If there is math you do not understand, ask why!
There is an answer for everything, and it is math.

What he said. I've never understood why we spend 4-8 years teaching the same kids how to multiply over and over again. If we didn't insist on redundancy we could be teaching calculus by eighth grade (maybe sooner.)
Remember, most things aren't hard, just complicated. My verbal skills are better than my math skills; my SAT verbal was 720. HOWEVER, my math was 700, and you know how I generally approach math? Persistently. Work the problem until you get the same answer twice. ALWAYS check your work if time allows. Funny how I always finished tests last, but with one of the higher, if not the highest scores.

And there's more than one way to skin a function. I clicked onto this site in the first place in the process of preparing a crash course for a friend who has to pass a math equivalency test in route to her art degree. My first, algebraic, attempt was a dismal failure; it makes sense to me because I think analyticly, but she thinks visually. So now we're gonna play the graphing game. Same data, different representation.

BTW, maybe I'm too smitten with the concept of the Renaissance man, but yes, I think everyone should study math, regardless of discipline. The practical applications are indispensable even if the transcendant beauty is not appreciated. And besides that, there's far too much specialization as it is. See George Bernard Shaw. Good luck with math, don't give up; if you can handle 1+1=2, you can handle 1+x=2, or even DxDy(y=x+1)=1. Bear in mind that math was only developed as a crutch for a species to obtuse to accept void and unity as is.

number one....EPII you are incredibly rude and i really dont think that we need your response if you are just going to bash breanna. Second of all, i think math is sucky for some poeple. It can suck..thats a fact. IN fact, so can figure skating. Everyone is different. But breanna , maybe if you approached at math with a more positive perspective then maybe you wouldnt hate it'so much. Third of all, it could be your teacher that is ruining math for you. HE or she maybe be, not to be rude, but a crappy teacher. I have had my share of those and finally this year, after bieng in remedial math (yes remedial...but i got over 90s in the honor classes but my mena math teacher recommended me to the remidial becuase SHE was a crappy teacher) i finnaly got a good math teacher who made math fun.

Well first of all everyone has a different point of view someone might thnk math sucks and hate it to tha max and some might think its awesome and protect it, but in the bottomline you really cant convince the person that thinks math sucks because of the fact that no matter how much we show her the reality that math isnt too hard it is all up to her and what can we do she doesnt like math you cant force everyone if we insist math to breanna and she still dont like it'she wouldnt do it because you cant force the horse to drink the water. And yah just like what peggy said math is hard for you because you dont know how to do it yet eventually if you learn how to do math you will like it because of the fact that you can do it and you dont find it hard. For us humans we get devastated on the outside of something so easily meaning if we see something long or a lil complicated we would most likely be so reluctant to participate on the topic but when we actually know it you will like it. Last but not the least Nothing is too hard what makes the certain thing hard is your brain's reluctancy to accept it and ya thats all i would say for now. always remember nothing is impossible nor too hard to do if you put your mind into it breanna.

Please, please, for all that's holy, USE PUNCTUATION!!!
This goes for you and for the girl that started this discussion.
And about math, I don't have anything else to say that hasn't been said already, so I'll just be silent.
All I would like to add is that people who don't like something because it's "too hard" for them make me sick.
It's your fault that the world is the way it is.
Yours faithfully;
Pilar.

Firstly, I think some of you are extremely nasty. I'm sure you all have something in your lives that you think sux. (Maybe your spelling and grammar Peggy) Everyone is really good at something....for some it's math and for some it's not.....That doesn't make people who are good at math better than anyone who isn't.
Secondly, I agree that the teaching, or lack thereof, has a lot to do with how much some kids struggle.
When we learn to read we first have to learn the alphabet and the sounds the letters make before we can put them together to make words, sentences, paragraphs and then stories and essays.
The same follows with math....there are basics that need to be solidly grasped before students can start applying priciples.
Without a solid foundation kids struggle, like trying to read sentences when you don't know the sounds the letters make....like trying to swim when you've never been in water, or trying to drive a car without knowing which pedal is which.
At high school (I am in Australia) I struggled with anti differential calculus in my final year. I scored 4% in my practice exam. Miraculously, I woke one morning 3 weeks later with it all much clearer and scored a pass. I then went on to study math, physics and chem at Uni.
What I'm getting at is that I was an A grade math student, yet ONE particular topic almost caused me to fail.....so it can happen to anybody....we all struggle with something at sometime, but keep trying, get a tutor or help from your teacher or classmates, and do every practice question you can find. Oh yeah, and also, don't be afraid to find a method that you understand, even if it's not the one taught by your teacher.....it's not which method you use thats important, it's understanding the method you use that is. (As long as the method is correct)
Anyway, best of luck....give it your best.....you CAN do it!!

Cheers :)

Dr. Thomas Guskey repeatedly points out one key insight about assessment: If more than 50% of your class misses something, the kids don't have an issue. The teacher does.

Breanna, you owe this your BEST shot... math is important for your future, and you CAN learn to look at the world through a mathematical perspective. If your teacher can't help, get help somewhere else. This one is too important to accept failure in.

I think fred is right. That math is very important in you future. I know that i have a teacher that I just can't understand she can't talk like the rest us in the school and I know that I go to some one who can tell me how to do the work and I can sit down with them and talk to whom ever. so take are advice and do what I is right.

Okay, I get your point. But, Breanna, ,I LIKE MATH! But, math doesn't have to be boring. Maybe it's your teacher. Maybe it's your method. (most things in math can be solved different ways.) Maybe you're just not looking at it in a fun way! For example:
12
(boring) X64= "who knows, who cares"

(FUN!) 12 (number of mosquito bites an enemy has)
X64 (number of chocolate-chip cookies you have)="768"
or something like that. Also, try asking the teacher if you're stuck. He/She can help you. Last but not least, give yourself incentive. I ask my math teacher ALL the TIME whether I can use the computer when I'm done. This gives me a reason to finish my work!
See if these make it more enjoyable. (think about "fun-i-fying" grammar class too!)
-Max

I'm not sure what I should say on this subject, "Math Sucks" seems a bit harsh. I'll go ahead and say it's too hard for me, but some people seem to like it, (obviously, mathematicians) however, it does seem to be quite a persistant field in education today. I don't believe that complex mathematic systems should be forced onto children who simply don't want, or even don't NEED to learn them. I believe there are some reasons for math to be learned, but some people Absolutely do not need to know it, don't care to know it, and (which I believe I am an example of) Cannot know it. Some people's minds simply work better in different fields of knowledge, some would rather know Science (which math is commonly known to be part of), history, or some people would prefere to expertise in the arts. Math should never be forced on a person, nor any other type of field of knowledge, just as it would not be fair to force a mathematician to learn twenty languages to graduate from school, why force someone to learn algebra, geometry, and calculus- why should a computer programmer have to know about biology? Why a writer have to know US history and government? Why should a person who knows what he wants to do with his life and does this quite well be forced to learn something irrelevant to his well-being, and interest?

23. "math can be very interesting"
In response to message #22

I never hated math.. when I was little, my mother claims I would ignore her until she said a number. math is taught incorrectly for the most part. math is not mulitplication tables, math is not repetition. Math is creative. Math is interesting.

I was a lucky one. in elementary school one of the kids dads was a mathematician, and he would come to our class once a week and show us something really cool. proofs are cool. I saw my first one when I was in 3rd grade, it changed the way I looked at the world.

math strives to find simple ways of understanding the world. math can make hard problems easier.

for example, if you add all the numbers from 1 to 100 what is the answer... it would take ages doing by hand right? 1+2+3.. how boring right? but there is a clever way of doing it.

1 + 2 + 3 + .... + 100 = S (the number we want to find)

100 + 99 + 98 + .... + 1 = S (change the order and still get S)

by adding the two lines we see:

101 + 101 + 101 + .... + 101 = S+S = 2xS

but there are 100 nummbers being added on the left so

2xS = 101x100

divide both sides by two and S = 101x50 = 5050

I think things like that are neat, and there is no reason intereseting things can't be taught at elementary school. math does not suck, what school systems do to math sucks.
