His Jan. 12 column %28http%3A%2F%2Fwww2.townonline.com%2Fnewton%2Fopinion%2Fview.bg%3Farticleid%3D161257.com%29 on the topic received so much attention%2C he said%2C his e-mail inbox was flooded with over 200 responses.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A%22I was surprised that this issue resonated so much with the general public%2C%22 Mountain said in an interview of what he called %22PC nonsense%22 going on at Newton. %22It would be silly and innocuous if it didn%27t have an effect on the school%27s standing%2C but it has.%22%0D%0A%0D%0ANewton Superintendent Jeffrey Young did not return several phone calls from FOXNews.com seeking comment. FOXNews.com also wanted to obtain copies of the benchmarks directly from the school but could not because school officials refused to return phone calls.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn the district%27s Web site where the math benchmarks for grades K-8 are mentioned%2C the Web page says%3A currently in process of curriculum review.%22%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bh3%5D%27Anti-Racist%27 %3D %27Anti-American%3F%27%5B%2Fh3%5D%0D%0A%0D%0ASome parents say their students not only are in desperate need of math help but that some students also don%27t know the basics of U.S. history and that antiracist policies are getting in the way of teaching the basics.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22The %27antiracist%27 and%2C actually%2C %27anti-American%27 curriculum permeates the school environment%2C%22 Lillian Benson%2C whose children%2C ages 8 and 11%2C attend the district%27s schools%2C told FOXnews.com in an e-mail.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22My children do not know Christopher Columbus%2C except that he was a racist who caused the death of many innocents or the founders of the nation. They have hardly heard of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln even though we live in the area that began it all. What they do know about is the wonders of Ghana%2C Mexico and China%2C%22 she said.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnother parent%2C Julie Agarkov says it%27s ridiculous that people living in the community pay top dollar so their kids can attend good public schools%2C yet she still pays to send her son to the Boston area%27s %5Bb%5DRussian School of Mathematics%5B%2Fb%5D %28http%3A%2F%2Fwww.russianschool.com%2F%29 %22to ensure that he gets a good math education.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AThe Russian School of Mathematics is a private%2C after-school math institution for kids grades K-12. Iness Rifkin%2C founder of the school%2C told FOXNews.com that of the 700 kids now enrolled in her school%2C 400 of them are from the Newton district%3B 120 of them are middle schoolers. She began the school out of her home seven years ago with her two children and a few of their friends.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22Now%2C seven years later%2C I have 700 students%2C mainly from Newton public schools %85 I can%27t even accommodate all the people who want to be in the school this year%2C%22 Rifkin said.%0D%0A%0D%0ARifkin said she approached Young to offer to either teach Newton teachers how to better teach math or to have the district give kids a choice to either attend Math at Newton or at her school at no extra charge to the district%3B parents already are paying to send their kids to her school. This way%2C kids wouldn%27t have to take math at two different places.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22He didn%27t want to listen to that%2C%22 she said. %22Parents tell me they feel sorry for their kids to spend double time %97 time in public school and time in my school.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AThe district%27s benchmarks reflect the %5Bb%5DNational Council of Teachers of Mathematics%27%5B%2Fb%5D %28NCTM%2C http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nct%2C.org%29 Principles and Standards for School Mathematics from 2000%2C as well as %22Newton%27s commitment to active anti-racist education%2C%22 according to the district%27s %22rationale%22 for its math teaching.%0D%0A%0D%0ANCTM President Cathy Seeley told FOXNews.com that her group%2C however%2C doesn%27t specifically address %22anti-racism.%22%0D%0A%0D%0A%22One of our principles is equity and making sure all students have access to math. There%27s certainly no direct comments in regards to anti-racism%2C%22 Seeley said. %22We don%27t have a formal position on that %5B%27anti-racist%27 education%5D but I think it%27s hard to argue with that basic concept.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AThe challenge that schools face now is how to do that in a way that addresses all the content areas with integrity and still maintains a basic respect for kids of all races and ethnic backgrounds%2C Seeley added.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bh3%5D%27Few Students Are Too Dumb to Learn%27%5B%2Fh3%5D%0D%0A%0D%0AEncouraging %22anti-racist%22 education in schools is part and parcel with what%27s called %22multicultural education%2C%22 a movement that%27s been afoot for years as some educators try to infuse more of a varied cultural insight into the classroom. This thinking is evident in many of Newton%27s schools.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe %5Bb%5Dprincipal%27s page%5B%2Fb%5D %28http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newton.mec.edu%2Fmemorialspaulding%2Fprincipal.html%29 for Memorial Spaulding Elementary School%2C for example%2C reads%3A %22We know that the context for optimal learning is a school which has a passion for children and for democracy%2C an intolerance for racism and for prejudice%2C a commitment to the creation of an anti-racist%2C prejudice-free learning environment%2C and a genuine desire to turn the concept of %27just society%27 into reality. We hope to be that school.%22%0D%0A%0D%0ABut some educators say some schools are taking the idea too far.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22How many more years of declining scores will it take for the school committee and state officials to put a stop to this educational malpractice on schoolchildren%3F%22 asked Peter Murphy%2C a New York education consultant. %22Values education should be done without gutting the state%92s math standards.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AAcademic advocates of multicultural education say anti-racist education and multicultural education are very close in definition and say many people don%27t have a good idea of exactly what racism is%2C so they don%27t understand efforts to combat it in the classroom.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22I think of %5Bmulticultural education%5D as a set of practices that confront the various forms of racism and institutionalized racisms that do exist in schools%2C as well as the larger society%2C and thinking of ways of breaking down and deconstructing forms of racism%2C%22 Christine Sleeter%2C professor emeritus at California State University at Monterey Bay and co-editor of %22Multicultural Education%2C Critical Pedagogy%2C and the Politics of Difference%2C%22 said. %22I think that a whole lot of people are fumbling around with%2C %27what are the issues%3F%27%22%0D%0A%0D%0ABut in classes like math%3F%0D%0A%0D%0A%22One of the ways I would apply anti-racist education to math is to ask%2C %27why is it that%2C generally speaking%2C white kids get better access to upper-level math learning than low-income kids and kids of color%3F%27%22 Sleeter said. %22%5BAnd%5D in what ways might math and science serve as tools for understanding and dealing with various social issues%3F%22%0D%0A%0D%0AThe %5Bb%5DNational Association of Multicultural Education%5B%2Fb%5D %28http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nameorg.org%2F%29 did not return phone calls for this story.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bb%5DJoanne Jacobs%5B%2Fb%5D %28http%3A%2F%2Fwww.joannejacobs.com%2F%29%2C a former San Jose Mercury News columnist who currently writes about education and other issues at JoanneJacobs.com%2C said pushing an %22anti-racist%22 math agenda all the time in class perpetrates the idea that kids of different colors can%27t learn the same way and actually works to widen the racial divide.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22I think if you racialize kids all throughout their education%2C all they think about is%2C %27has a black person done that before%3F%27%22 Jacobs said. %22If we would simply say%2C %27these are subjects that other human beings have found learnable%2C you%27re a human being%2C you can learn it%2C and try to deracialize the way we teach%2C it can work %85 very few students are too dumb to learn.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AAt the very least%2C Jacobs and others said%2C push the political-correctness in a separate%2C or more relevant class%2C but not math.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22I personally think it would be far healthier for kids%2C if you want to talk about culture%2C talk about it in Social Studies but don%27t talk about it in every single class%2C%22 Jacobs said. %22It%27s a waste of their time in math and science%2C and I think it%27s fundamentally wrong.%22%0D%0A %0D%0A
