Subject: Distance to the horizon
Date: Wed, 29 Jan 1997 16:43:07 -0500
From: tom bush

A normal size man say 5'9" is standing at the seashore on a clear day and looking out over the water. How far can he see? I say he is only seeing maybe a mile but friends are saying he could see many miles. I think the curvature of the earth wouldn't allow him to see to far. what if an island was in his view and it raised out of the water 200 feet, how far away could it be before he would lose sight?
