Subject: Coincidences in card dealing
Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 12:37:26 -0800
From: ROGER RAND

I HAVE A QUESTION THAT I HAVE BEEN ASKING PEOPLE FOR NEARLY TEN YEARS AND CANNOT FIND ANYONE WHO CAN EVEN TELL ME WHO MIGHT BE ABLE TO ANSWER IT. HERE'S YOUR TURN AT IT. IF YOU AND I BOTH HOLD A STANDARD DECK OF CARDS, PROPRELY SHUFFLED, AND WE EACH START TURNING THEM OVER 1 CARD AT A TIME, WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT WE WILL TURN OVER THE IDENTICAL CARD BEFORE GOING THROUGH THE ENTIRE DECK? MOST PEOPLE SAY 1 IN 52 OR 1 IN 104, BUT I AM CERTAIN THE ODDS OF MATCHING AT LEAST 1 CARD ARE CLOSER TO 60% TO 70% BUT CAN NOT BACK IT UP.
